Born in Roeselare on 7 July as the fifth child in a family of six.
Father tells stories at the table to keep the children quiet. Once a week, the children are allowed to tell a story, taking turns. Luc reveals himself a storyteller.
Mother teaches him to hang fish in the cherry-tree to chase the birds away.
Fifth year of primary school. Brother Herman hangs one of Luc’s drawings on the classroom wall. It is a drawing of a fire, abstract blotches with a jet of water.
He sees his first film: Mon Oncle by Jacques Tati.
Learns to sketch from André Vandeghinste.
Meets Geert Clarisse and Isidoor Godderis. Luc is impressed by Geert’s sketches and Isidoor’s sculptures.
Meets Paul Depondt and learns to read books from him.
Goes to the cinema every night and discovers Italian films.
Starts higher studies at the Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK), where he takes the animation programme. With Raoul Servais, Pierre Vlerick and Charlotte De Groote, he experiences the power of a pat on the back.
Makes friends with Willy Cauwelier and Gerrie Roels and finds a second home with them.
Discovers the animated films of Jan Svankmajer, which he has continued to admire.
